These words of Jesus resonate with me.
They cut to the quick.
They are unworried about other’s opinions.
They are uncaring of the culture’s perspective.
They are pointed and intentional.
And they require an answer.
An honest answer.
Who do you say I am?
And while many may have a perspective on this,
This is what I believe.
Jesus is Messiah
He is the Promised One of long ago.
A bearer of the love of God.
The Holy One of God sent to bring the message of Good News.
Who restores sight to the blind.
Who heals the lame.
Who opens the ears of the deaf.
Who raises the dead.
Jesus is Lord
He is the Master.
He is the Teacher.
The Son of God.
The Son of Man.
The Alpha and the Omega.
The One to be followed.
Emulated.
Copied.
Obeyed.
Jesus is Savior
Yeshua.
The Deliverer.
The Redeemer.
Lover of my soul.
The Bridegroom.
And I do know that there are some who think my beliefs are crazy.
That they are foolish.
Moronic.
But, As Paul wrote in the reading from 1 Corinthians this week,
“The message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing,
but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”
It’s only true because it’s true.
The cross and the message of the cross
have no value to those who believe it has no value.
“To those who are perishing,” Paul says.
As I say regularly,
“You can’t tell a fish they’re wet.”
When you are immerses in a life that is adrift,
Or worse, a life that is unhealthy,
And your choices are not guiding you down a path of fruitfulness,
You don’t see it.
You can’t see it.
Unless you have people who love you,
People who care for you encouraging you to see,
It is unlikely you will change.
An object at rest tends to stay at rest.
Newton’s first law.
This law talks about things in (literal) motion
And things at rest,
But it applies to the unmoving life as well.
And so, by our lives,
We declare who we say He is.
“Liar, lunatic or Lord,” as C.S. Lewis wrote.
And hopefully our answer is Lord.
Not just as an opinion.
But a motivator for our lives.
That is ordered about being sanctified.
Set apart.
Holy.
Other.
For the sake of life.
Abundant life.
And not just for ourselves.
But for all those who we love.
And care for.
A love and care that is deep enough to listen.
And see.
And act.
On behalf of someone who has yet to love God,
But deserves the love of God’s people.
So, can we have this perspective?
Can we set ourselves apart for the work of the Cross?
Can we commit ourselves to the living out of our faith
In the midst of a world that so desperately needs it.
Will we continue to be a community of care?
A house of worship?
A sanctuary to those seeking rest for their souls?
May the blessings of this season of Lent be upon you all,
